As we head into a new year and a new decade, it’s as good a time as any to see which website trends are likely to play a significant role in 2020.
1. Video content
Evidence shows that casual browsers would rather watch a video of someone talking to them, than read the exact same content for themselves. With compression rates improving and the cost of storage solutions plummeting, it’s anticipated that video interactions will account for 4/5 of all online traffic.
2. Mobile-first web design
Most web design companies will build a desktop version of your site first, then optimise it for mobile use. Not so in 2020. With the lion’s share of internet activity taking place on smartphones and other mobile devices, getting that version of your site up and running first will become a priority.
3. Virtual chatbots and AI
One of the most popular website additions this year has been automated chatbots to handle customer queries that arise outside of office hours. As AI and language recognition improves, these will only become more common.
4. Dynamic content
The days of websites being just an electronic shopfront are long gone. Visitors in 2020 will expect an online experience, with dynamic content tailored to meet their own personality traits.
5. Augmented reality
Augmented reality (or AR) allows customers to superimpose computer-generated images onto their real-world view. As this becomes the norm, it will allow them to make sure any new purchase fits in with their existing décor.
6. Bold colours and custom fonts
With more businesses online, it is incumbent on you to make your website stand out. You can have the best content in the world, but it only counts if customers are drawn to you in the first place. 2020 will see striking, bold colours and eye-catching customised fonts being at the forefront of website branding.
7. Voice-enabled interaction
Apps like Siri and Alexa have made voice-enabled interaction a top priority for many leading brands and 2020 will see this reach extend further into the mainstream. Being able to examine and purchase items via voice-control is going to be huge in the next 12 months.
The new year promises to be an exciting time for web design. We hope these predictions will help you stay ahead of the pack.
